Zum 500jährigen Jubiläum der Reichsnotariatsordnung im Jahre 2012 erscheint mit diesem Handbuch ein Band, der in 21 Beiträgen die Geschichte des deutschen Notariats seit der Reichsnotariatsordnung von 1512 neu erarbeitet. Erläutert wird dabei zunächst die Bedeutung der Reichsnotariatsordnung sowie die Entwicklung des Notariats auf gesamtdeutscher Ebene bis heute. Die Geschichte des Notariats auf Territorialebene behandeln zwölf weitere Beiträge zu ausgesuchten Territorien (u.a. Baden, Bayern, Hannover, Preußen, Sachsen und die Rheinprovinz). Den Abschluss bilden Beiträge zur Fortentwicklung der notariellen Berufspraxis. Insgesamt kommen in diesem Band 19 Notare und Universitätsprofessoren zu Wort, zu deren Interessengebieten die Notariatsgeschichte zählt. Bedeutend ist der Band zum einen für den historisch interessierten Notar, der die Geschichte seines Berufsstandes nachverfolgen möchte, zum anderen für den Historiker und Juristen, der die historischen Grundlagen der Notartätigkeit als Teil der vorsorgenden Rechtspflege ermitteln möchte. Das Werk ist Teil der Reihe Rheinische Schriften zur Rechtsgeschichte, Band 17.
